Hands Off Chicago Coalition Statement: Minneapolis ICE Murder

CHICAGO – The Hands Off Chicago coalition, supported by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, Indivisible Chicago, Personal PAC, Equality Illinois, Sierra Club Illinois, the Illinois AFL-CIO, the Chicago Federation of Labor, released the following statement in response to the murder of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent yesterday in Minneapolis:

“Renee Nicole Good should be alive. Her murder comes after weeks of escalating violence by ICE and CBP against Minnesotans and after months of attacks that we continue to endure in the Chicago area. ICE murdered Renee as she stood witness to their assault on her neighbors. The shooting happened just one mile from where George Floyd was murdered, a striking reminder that state violence continues to target the same communities, just under different excuses.

“As we well know in Chicago, this tragedy was predictable and preventable. Last year, ICE shot two people in our communities, one fatally. And just like in Chicago, Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, and their right-wing echo chamber spin lies, create false narratives, and obstruct proper investigations. As Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said of the Department of Homeland Security’s claims following the shooting, ‘...that is bullshit.’

“The horrific violence in Minnesota comes as ICE operations are continuing here in the Chicago area. Renee’s murder could have happened to any of the brave neighbors and bystanders who stand guard, blow whistles, and document ICE raids in Chicago. The Trump regime is endangering our families, our freedoms, and our futures.

“As we stand in solidarity with Minneapolis, these atrocities only strengthen our resolve to protect each other, end the terror and illegal actions of the Trump regime, and stand with our neighbors under attack in saying #HandsOffChicago for as long as it takes.”
